Cataract Awareness Month

June marks Cataract Awareness Month, a time to educate individuals about one of the most common eye conditions affecting millions of people worldwide. At Vision Care Clinic, Bristol’s leading private eye clinic, we are passionate about raising awareness about cataracts and the importance of early detection and timely treatment.

What is a Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in the eye, typically resulting in blurred vision, distorted colours, poor night vision, and sensitivity to light. The lens is a natural part of the eye that focuses light onto the retina, allowing us to see clearly. With age, the natural proteins in the lens break down and clump together, causing the lens to become cloudy and opaque. This clouding of the lens leads to cataracts, which can significantly impact one’s quality of life.

Who Is at Risk of Cataracts?

Cataracts mainly develop in people over the age of 60, but they can affect anyone, including new-borns and young children, as well as those with certain medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. Cataracts can also be caused by smoking, drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, and prolonged exposure to UV light.

Signs and Symptoms of Cataracts

Some of the common signs and symptoms of cataracts include:

  • Blurred or hazy vision
  • Increasing difficulty with vision at night
  • Sensitivity to light and glare
  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Fading or yellowing of colours
  • Double vision in one eye
  • Need for more light for reading and other activities
  • Frequent changes in contact lens or glasses prescription

If you do develop cataracts, timely treatment is important to prevent them from worsening and causing further vision impairment. Cataract surgery is an effective and safe procedure that involves the removal of the clouded lens and replacement with an artificial lens. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis and typically takes about 15 minutes. Patients often experience significant improvement in their vision shortly after the surgery and can resume their normal activities with minimal downtime. Cataract surgery has a high success rate and has the potential to significantly enhance a patient’s quality of life by restoring clear vision and reducing visual disturbances caused by cataracts.

YAG Laser at Vision Care Clinic

At Vision Care Clinic, YAG laser capsulotomy is a procedure aimed at improving vision clarity following cataract surgery. Patients may require this surgical intervention when their vision becomes blurred months or years after the initial cataract surgery. The cloudiness affecting vision is often caused by the development of a hazy membrane known as the posterior capsule within the eye. Through YAG laser capsulotomy, our skilled ophthalmologists can address this issue and restore clear vision for our patients.
