Consultation at Vision Care Clinic
How often should I have my eyes examined?
For most adults, a comprehensive eye exam is recommended every 1–2 years. If you have existing eye conditions, wear contact lenses, or are over 60, you may need more frequent exams.
How long will my eye exam take?
A standard comprehensive eye exam typically takes around 60 minutes, depending on your specific needs and whether additional testing is required.
What are the signs I might need an eye exam?
Common signs include blurry vision, headaches, eye strain, trouble focusing, squinting, or difficulty seeing at night. If you experience any of these, it’s a good idea to schedule an eye exam.
What should I bring to my appointment?
If you are a new patient, please bring your current glasses or contacts. If available and/or applicable, bring any previous spectacle prescriptions, referral letters or historical ophthalmic and a list of medications.
Day of Procedure
What time should I arrive for my procedure?
Please arrive a few minutes before your scheduled procedure time to allow for check-in, pre-op assessments, and any last-minute paperwork. We will confirm your exact arrival time, within the week before your treatment.
Can I eat or drink before my procedure?
This depends on the type of procedure. As most treatments only require a topical anaesthetic with eye drops, we suggest a light meal with fluids before arrival.
Always follow the specific instructions given during your pre-op consultation.
Should I take my regular medications?
Yes, continue taking your prescribed medications unless your doctor tells you otherwise. If you’re diabetic, or on blood thinners or insulin, please consult us ahead of time for specific guidance.
What should I wear on the day of the procedure?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Avoid eye makeup, face creams, lotions, perfume, or cologne, as these can interfere with sterile conditions. Please do not wear contact lenses unless instructed to.
Do I need someone to drive me home?
Yes. For most procedures, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home or arrange alternative transport home. It is not always necessary to be accompanied; however, many patients appreciate the support of a family member or friend.
The Procedure
How long will the procedure take?
This depends on the type of procedure, which will be explained when you book. However, you will be advised how long you should plan to be at the practice for preparation, aftercare and allowing for any unforeseen delays.
Will I be awake during the procedure?
Most vision procedures are done under local anaesthesia or topical, numbing eye drops, and you will remain awake but comfortable.
Can I return to work or normal activities the same day?
Most patients are advised to rest for the remainder of the day. Depending on the procedure, most patients may resume light activities within 24 hours, but avoid strenuous physical activity, driving, or using screens excessively until your follow-up visit confirms it is safe. You will be advised prior to treatment about your specific procedure recovery.
