What Is LASIK Surgery?

How LASIK Works

During a LASIK procedure, the eye surgeon first creates a very thin, hinged flap on the cornea. Now this is usually done using a laser (femtosecond laser,) rather than a microkeratome, a specialist instrument that was used many years ago. Once the flap is created, the surgeon carefully lifts this to access the underlying corneal tissue. Then, a second laser, called an excimer laser is used to precisely reshape the corneal tissue. After the cornea is reshaped, the flap is carefully repositioned, where it naturally adheres without the need for stitches.

Who Is a Good Candidate for LASIK?

• Stable vision: Your prescription should remain stable for at least a year before considering LASIK surgery. If your vision is still changing on a regular basis you will need to wait for your glasses prescription to stabilise.
• Healthy eyes: You should achieve good, corrected vision in glasses or contact lenses. People with other underlying ophthalmic conditions, dry eyes or thin corneas may also be less suitable candidates for LASIK.
