What You Need to Know About LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) eye surgery is one of the most popular and effective methods for correcting refractive vision problems, such as shortsight (myopia), longsight (hyperopia), and astigmatism. For many individuals, LASIK offers the chance to reduce or even eliminate their dependency on glasses or contact lenses, leading to clearer vision and improved quality of life. But how does the procedure work, and who is a good candidate?

What Is LASIK Surgery?

LASIK is a minimally invasive laser eye surgery that reshapes the cornea (the clear, dome-shaped surface of the eye) to improve vision by redirecting light to focus onto the retina. The procedure involves using two specialist lasers to remove small amounts of corneal tissue, correcting the shape of the cornea to focus light correctly and improve vision.

The LASIK procedure typically takes around 30 minutes for both eyes and is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home the same day. It is done under local anaesthesia in the form of numbing eye drops, so you remain comfortable and pain-free throughout the process. Most patients experience minimal discomfort after the procedure and can resume most normal activities within a day or two.

How LASIK Works

During a LASIK procedure, the eye surgeon first creates a very thin, hinged flap on the cornea. Now this is usually done using a laser (femtosecond laser,) rather than a microkeratome, a specialist instrument that was used many years ago. Once the flap is created, the surgeon carefully lifts this to access the underlying corneal tissue. Then, a second laser, called an excimer laser is used to precisely reshape the corneal tissue. After the cornea is reshaped, the flap is carefully repositioned, where it naturally adheres without the need for stitches.

Benefits of LASIK Surgery

Quick and Effective
LASIK is a fast procedure with immediate results. Most patients notice an improvement in vision within hours or the next day. While it may take a few weeks for full clarity of vision and stabilisation, the majority of individuals see dramatic improvement in their eyesight right away.

Minimal Discomfort
Unlike older refractive surgeries, LASIK is less invasive and causes minimal pain. Many patients report feeling just a mild scratchy sensation immediately after surgery, but this usually fades within hours.

Long-Term Results
LASIK provides long-lasting results, with the majority of patients enjoying clear distance vision for life, without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Quick Recovery
One of the biggest advantages of LASIK is its rapid recovery time. Most people can resume normal activities, such as driving and working, within one or two days.

Who Is a Good Candidate for LASIK?

Not everyone is a suitable candidate for LASIK surgery. Ideal candidates generally meet the following criteria:

  • Age 18 or older: This is an elective procedure and your eyes should be fully developed before undergoing LASIK, which is usual from 18 years upwards.
  • Stable vision: Your prescription should remain stable for at least a year before considering LASIK surgery. If your vision is still changing on a regular basis you will need to wait for your glasses prescription to stabilise.
  • Healthy eyes: You should achieve good, corrected vision in glasses or contact lenses. People with other underlying ophthalmic conditions, dry eyes or thin corneas may also be less suitable candidates for LASIK.

During a consultation at Vision Care Clinic, our experienced surgeons will perform a thorough evaluation to determine whether LASIK is right for you. This includes assessing the shape and thickness of your cornea, measuring your prescription, and conducting other tests to ensure the best possible outcome.
