How to Care for Your Eyes During a Heat Wave

When temperatures rise and the sun shines brighter for longer, most of us remember to protect our skin—but our eyes need just as much care. Heat waves can increase exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, trigger allergies, and create conditions that irritate or dry out the eyes.

Vision Care Clinic would like to explain why eye care is so important during hot weather and provide simple, effective ways to keep your eyes healthy all summer long.

Your eyes are particularly vulnerable during a heat wave due to:

– Increased UV exposure from stronger sunlight

– Higher pollen levels, worsening hay fever symptoms

– Dry, hot air, which can lead to irritation and dryness

– More time outdoors or in water, increases the risk of infection

Without proper care, these factors can contribute to discomfort, infections, or longer-term eye health issues.

It’s important to protect your eyes from UV damage, just like your skin; your eyes can be damaged by UV radiation. Prolonged exposure can increase the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and photokeratitis (sunburn of the eye).

To help protect your eyes, wear quality sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays and choosing wraparound styles, offers added protection from side exposure.  Dark lenses don’t necessarily mean better protection; always check for a UV protection label.

Don’t forget wide-brimmed hats or caps for extra shade and children are even more sensitive to UV damage.

We are often asked if sun cream should be applied around the eyes; the answer is yes.

The skin around your eyes is delicate and prone to sun damage, but applying the wrong products can cause irritation if they enter the eyes, so try using eye-safe sunscreen or mineral-based SPF (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide). Try choosing fragrance-free or hypoallergenic formulas, avoiding sprays or oily products, as sweat can carry them into the eye, causing discomfort. Always apply carefully to the orbital bone area, avoiding the lash line

If you are already managing allergies and hay fever, this can feel worse during a heat wave, as hot weather often brings higher pollen counts, which can inflame symptoms such as red, itchy, or watery eyes, swelling or irritation, with increased sensitivity to light

Protect your eyes by always wearing sunglasses outdoors to act as a barrier against pollen, wash your face and eyes regularly, especially after being outside – tea tree lid wipes may be helpful.  Regularly use preservative-free lubricating eye drops to soothe irritation, keep windows closed during high pollen times (early morning and evening), and consider antihistamine eye drops or tablets if symptoms persist

Whilst enjoying the sun and hot weather, please be aware of the dangers of wearing contact lenses whilst in the sea or swimming pool. Swimming with contact lenses exposes your eyes to waterborne bacteria and microorganisms, such as acanthamoeba, a rare but serious infection that can damage vision plus chlorine and salt, which can irritate and dry out lenses.

Try avoiding wearing contact lenses while swimming, whenever possible, and if you need to wear them, try daily disposable lenses and discard them immediately after use.  Alternatively, wear well-fitted swim goggles for an added barrier; prescription swimming goggles correct your vision while in the water.

General tips for healthy eyes include remaining hydrated to support tear production and prevent dryness, use artificial tears, if your eyes feel dry or irritated  and avoid direct exposure to fans or air conditioning blowing into your eyes.

If you persistently experience any of the following symptoms and find home therapy is not having any effect, it’s important to contact an eye professional for advice.

Looking after your eyes during a heat wave doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few simple precautions—like wearing UV-protective sunglasses, managing allergies, and practising good contact lens hygiene—you can enjoy the sunshine while keeping your eyes safe and healthy.
