Laser Eye Surgery Treatment for Glaucoma

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of vision loss worldwide, and early, effective management is essential to protecting long-term sight. At Vision Care Clinic, patients benefit from the expertise of our leading glaucoma specialist, Dr Demitri Manasses, who provides advanced laser treatments tailored to each individual’s condition.

Understanding Glaucoma

Glaucoma refers to a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often due to raised intraocular pressure (IOP). Over time, this pressure can lead to gradual and irreversible vision loss if not properly controlled.

Treatment focuses on lowering eye pressure to prevent further damage. While medicated eye drops are often the first line of treatment, laser procedures can play a crucial role in both early and advanced cases.

What Is Laser Eye Surgery for Glaucoma?

Unlike laser vision correction procedures such as LASIK, laser treatment for glaucoma does not aim to improve your glasses prescription. Instead, it works to improve the drainage of fluid from the eye or reduce the production of fluid: ultimately lowering intraocular pressure.

There are several types of laser procedures used in glaucoma management:

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

SLT is commonly used for open-angle glaucoma. The laser targets specific cells in the eye’s drainage system (the trabecular meshwork), stimulating improved fluid outflow. The procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and performed in clinic.

One of the key benefits of SLT is that it can reduce or even eliminate the need for daily eye drops in some patients. It can also be safely repeated if necessary.

Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI)

For patients with angle-closure glaucoma or narrow angles, LPI creates a tiny opening in the iris. This helps fluid circulate more effectively within the eye and reduces the risk of sudden pressure spikes.

The Role of Expertise in Glaucoma Care

Glaucoma management requires careful diagnosis, detailed imaging, and long-term monitoring. That’s why choosing a specialist is so important.

At Vision Care Clinic, Dr Demitri Manasses brings extensive experience in diagnosing and treating all forms of glaucoma. Every patient undergoes comprehensive testing, including optic nerve imaging and visual field assessment, to determine the most appropriate treatment or care pathway.

Laser treatment is not suitable for every patient, but when recommended at the right stage, it can be highly effective in stabilising eye pressure and slowing disease progression.

Is Laser Treatment a Glaucoma Cure?

It’s important to understand that laser treatment does not cure glaucoma or restore lost vision. Glaucoma damage is permanent. However, timely intervention can significantly reduce the risk of further deterioration.

Many patients appreciate that laser treatment is:

  • Quick and performed without general anaesthetic
  • Minimally invasive
  • Associated with a fast recovery
  • Effective in lowering intraocular pressure

In some cases, it may delay or prevent the need for more invasive surgical procedures.

Protecting Your Vision for the Future

Glaucoma is often symptomless in its early stages, which is why regular eye examinations are essential, particularly if you are over 40 or have a family history of the condition.

At Vision Care Clinic, our priority is protecting your long-term sight. Under the care of Mr Demitri Manasses, patients receive personalised and empathetic care, with evidence-based treatment, designed to manage glaucoma effectively and safeguard vision.

If you have concerns about glaucoma or would like to explore whether laser treatment may be right for you, our experienced team is here to provide expert guidance and reassurance every step of the way.
